Partner/Venue: Co-presentation with the Rialto Center for the Arts
In celebration of Jacob Lawrence’s 100th Birthday, and the reunification of his seminal 60-panel work, The Migration of the Negro, Step Afrika! has brought to the stage its critically-acclaimed production of The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence in partnership with Washington Performing Arts and The Phillips Collection.
The Great Migration from the South to the North in the 1920s radically changed the lives of African Americans. Lawrence depicted this historic movement in The Migration of the Negro series. Step Afrika! brings Lawrence’s iconic paintings to life through the medium of African-American stepping, South African Gumboot and traditional Western African dance, vocals, drumming and audience participation in The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence.
