Judging & Important Dates

The First Glance: Fresh Perspectives From Young Artists Competition is now open to students aged 14-18 Internationally.  Students, parents, teachers or legal guardians may submit work on behalf of a young artist as long as the work is accompanied by a completed submission. Only one work may be submitted per artist by the April 15,2012 deadline.

THE COMPETITION

First Glance is an International competition designed for teens, aged 14-18. The purpose of the competition is to provide an outlet and opportunity for young artists to express themselves creatively through filmmaking, spoken word and visual arts.

JUDGING

Qualifying Round

Each participant will submit an original work via the NBAF website by the April 15, 2012 deadline. The initial round of judging will take place between April 15, 2012 and May 1, 2012. Participants in each category who qualify will advance to the semi-final round.

Semi-Final Round

New judges will be added to the qualifying panel to judge the semi-final round. Judging will take place between May 1, 2012 and May 15, 2012. Participants in each category with the highest scores will advance to the final round. Finalists will be announced by May 25, 2012.

Final Round

Judges will choose a first-place winner and two runner-ups in each of the three categories at the Finals on July 21, 2012 in Atlanta, GA.  The finals will consist of a screening of all film work, an exhibition of visual arts work and a spoken word slam.  All final participants will be honored at a VIP reception after the final competition.  Winners will receive up to $1000 in cash prizes, non-cash prizes, access to professional mentoring and master classes with professional artists.

Judging Criteria

  • Originality: in form and content and emergence of a personal voice or vision
  • Execution: technical skill
  • Theme communication: how well the theme is expressed in the work
  • Aesthetics: composition, color combination, and visual impact

 ELIGIBILITY

  • Participants must be 14-18 years old and may reside anywhere in the world.

CALENDAR

  • April 15, 2012: Deadline for submissions
  • May 25, 2012: Announcement of Finalists
  • June 15, 2012: Visual Arts Finalists must have work delivered to NBAF
  • July 21, 2012: First Glance Finals in Atlanta, GA
